Sable Publishing: Not recommended. A publisher that features "Interesting literary content, easy reading formats, entertaining fictional characters, great stories, mysteries, romance, and enough schmaltz to warm the heart and mind.'
Safkhet Publishing LLP: "an independent publishing house based in the picturesque English town of Cambridge. We publish what we believe in and what we know we can promote. Currently our list includes three imprints: cookbooks, science fiction/fantasy, and a few selections of really fantastic work (Safkhet Select). We do not accept drug-use promoting, horror or pornographic manuscripts. We promise to be up front and honest with your work, because we respect you as much as we want you to respect us. We are also environmentally conscious and only use FSC or similarly certified printers for our books."
Saga Books: A publisher.
Salvo Press: "publishes mystery, suspense, espionage and thriller novels in trade paper and Rocket eBook format. We have also launched a line of literary novels exclusively in eBook format."
Sam's Publishing: "One of the largest and most successful computer book publishers in the world, Sams Publishing has more than 500 titles in print. From introductory tutorials to comprehensive reference books, Sams Publishing is focused on teaching tomorrow’s programmers, developers, and systems administrators the skills they need to build and maintain leading-edge technology."
Samhain Publishing Ltd.: Recommended. Appears to be an ebook and print publisher specializing in romance, erotic, fantasy and sci-fi only.
Sanctum Press: An electronic publisher. Link not valid.
Sandrilyn Publications: "As of April 1, 2007 Sandrilyn Publications accepts only solicited (agented) manuscripts for traditional publication (See our website – http://www.sandrilynpublications.com -- for submission guidelines). We will review all manuscripts received prior to that date for consideration for traditional publication. Sandrilyn Publications has also added a new imprint, Sandrilyn Books, that is a subsidy publisher."
SANDS Publishing: Charges evaluation fee. Not recommended. A vanity publisher. "a royalty-paying publisher of book-length fiction and nonfiction. Submission guidelines are posted on the website. Founded by Diana Saenger and Sandy Scoville in May of 2001, the publishers, both writers, had distinguished careers in publishing prior to opening SANDS. Books are published in eBook and trade paperback."
Santa Monica Press: A publisher. "Our vision extends from lively and modern how-to books to offbeat looks at popular culture, from film history to literature."
Sarabande: A publisher interested in poetry and short fiction.
Sasquatch Books: A book publisher.
Sassafras Books: A new small publisher. 4/4/07: a writer reports difficulty contacting them. 8/7/07: another writer reports the company isn't viable according to its owner. Unverified.
Savant Books and Publications LLC: "Significant Books and Enduring Media for the 21st Century."
SAXCO E-Book Publishers: An e-publisher. Link corrupted.
SCB Distributors: A national distributor that distributes titles for approximately ninety publishers. Single title publishers are generally not welcome.
Scheherazade Tales Romance E-Novels: An epublisher. Link broken.
Schiel & Denver Publishing Limited: Not recommended. "An on-demand self-publishing publisher." "We offer high quality and affordable book publishing services with global distribution, translation, transcription and a wide range of editorial and marketing services from professional copy-editing to author webdesign and event marketing at major international fairs - i.e. London Book Fair and BookExpo America. S&D provides distribution to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Chapters Indigo and thousands of leading bookstores, both traditional and online. Schiel & Denver has recently been honored with membership to the United Nations Global Compact in New York, and with our American distributors and print-on-demand facilities at three locations in America, Europe, the Far-East and Australia, we have eliminated long distance shipping costs, fulfilling all U.S. orders within the continental USA." Also services the UK.
Schiffer Publishing: Contract contains some poor terms. A publisher that appears to specialize in antiques, art, architecture and design, arts and crafts, aviation history, body, mind, and spirit, lifestyle, and military history.
Schiller & Wells: A vanity publisher.
SCHOLASTIC INC.: A children's book publisher.
Scribblers and Ink Spillers: A publisher of short fiction and poetry in both journal and book formats.
Scrybe Press: "A publisher of short genre fiction (horror, science fiction, fantasy) in chapbook or standard paperback form." This publisher appears to be late in producing its books according to reports received by P&E. 2/20/08: A writer claims they're late or failing in producing royalty statements.
Seaburn Publishers: Poor contract. Not recommended. A publisher.
Seal Press: A book publisher featuring books by and for women.
Second Wind Publishing: A publisher specializing in Romance, Crime and Mystery, Action and Adventure, and Mainstream.
Secret Cravings Publishing: A publisher featuring romances and erotica.
Self Publishing, Inc.: A self-publishing business.
Sensorotika Press: Appears to be a publishing house featuring erotica.
Seven Locks Press: Not recommended. A vanity publisher.
SevenHouse Press: A self-publishing company.
Severed Press: A publisher that specializes in horror fiction.
Seven Realms Publishing, LLC: A small press specializing in Romance, Mystery, Suspense/Thriller, Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Contemporary Paranormal, and Christian.
Shadowrose Publishing: A new publisher using both electronic and print publication. 3/26/08: reported closed.
Shadowstone Press: A publisher. Address unknown. Editor's note: we've received complaints about this publisher.

Silhouette: An imprint of Harlequin Enterprises.
Silk's Vault Publishing, LLC.: A "royalty paying e-publishing company that specializes in publishing sensual to erotic romantic fiction, be it mainstream romance or pure erotica. We prefer boldly written stories that contains content both sexual and explicit and has a tendency to stretch the rules." There may be some trouble with this publisher according to reports at Piers Anthony's.
Silver Boomers: A publisher that concentrates on prose and poetry about baby boomers in their later years.
Silver Dragon Books: "an imprint of Renaissance Alliance Publishing, Inc., publishes fantasy, science fiction and science fantasy novels by new and established authors." A writer reports "they closed submissions for that imprint this past spring." 2/6/04: A writer reports link goes elsewhere.
Silver Lake Publishing: "will be offering works of speculative fiction in electronic (and possibly print on demand) formats." 8/21/08: Believed defunct.
Silver Leaf Books: Poor contract. Not recommended. A publisher.

Slick Friction: "publishes romance erotica and our primary audience is women aged 18 to 98. We welcome submissions from new and unpublished authors as well as from established writers. Each Slick Friction story features a strong, adult female main character. We are otherwise open to any variation of gender identity or sexuality."
Small Dogma: Not recommended. A vanity publisher.
Small Garlic Press, A: A small, cooperative, poetry press publishing poetry and short fiction chapbooks. "So what are chapbooks? Chapbooks are small volumes of work by one poet/writer, 20-60 pages. We print small runs of 300 or less and split the run usually 50/50 with the author for distribution." Quote from their policy page.
Smashwords: A digital
self-publishing service.
SNM Book Publishing: A self-publisher. Authors retain 100% of book sale profits. Offers flat fees for complete production of book, full contextual, text, and grammatical editing, professional formatting, custom book art design, jacket blurb, ISBN # and copyright in author's name. Fee also includes one year of web advertising of author's book on SNM Horror Magazine.
Snohomish Publishing Co.: A commericial printer catering to small to medium size print runs of 5.5 x 8.5 format books. All categories welcome. 5/27/07: a writer reports they're a self-publishing company. Contact Dave Stewart at:Snohomish Publishing Co.

Sourcebooks, Inc.: A publisher with several imprints. Most appear to concentrate on non-fiction while one handles fiction.
Southern Charm Press: "an independent publisher located in Hampton, Georgia. We publish both fiction and non-fiction in a wide variety of subjects in both categories. Our books are done in trade paperback and e-book form. Submission guidelines at website." Check guidelines carefully! 10/24/03: complaints are emerging that warrant caution.
Southern Cross University Press: An Australian book publisher. Also publishes electronic and self-published books.
Southwest Publishing and Stacey Kohan: Not recommended. A publisher. 8/14/07: P&E has a report this editor previously operated NF Publishing which we understand was being sued for non-payment by its printers. 3/9/09: More reports of the same behavior are emerging for this publisher.
Sovereign Publications: Not recommended. Believed bankrupt. "Owners have been indicted for mail fraud and have pled guilty (January 2000). If you have questions, call the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky in Lexington." A book publisher.
Spectrum Press: A book publisher. Link invalid.
Spectrutek: Publishers of Fine Science Fiction and Fantasy: book publisher. Offers subsidy contracts. 5/4/04: Editor's note: site now links to an adult site. We believe it is no longer in operation.

SBPRA (Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Agency): Not recommended. Currently being sued by Florida State Attorney General. A vanity publisher.
- 4/13/11: Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Agency appears to be misleading writers. They're showing books by authors they don't represent in their graphic on their web page.
- 5/18/11: The "Situation" of Jersey Shores fame is suing Robert Fletcher of Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Agency in Florida claiming him to be involved in fraud.
- 10 Jun 11: P&E has unofficial word that Robert Fletcher of Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Agency has agreed to make restitution pursuant all Florida residents with the Florida state Attorney General. This is not verified.
7/1/11: Robert Fletcher of Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Agency appears to have been called a con artist by the Situation's father. In the settlement, Fletcher had to pay $5,000.00.
