What ought to strike authors first is the name that P&E used for the query using PA's online form. PA's staff didn't even blink at the name or consider its other meaning. After all, can you imagine PA eventually sending a promotional statement to a local newspaper in Richmond, Virginia announcing their newest book by Richard Cranium?
However, P&E went ahead and sent a manuscript to PA in the following email as an attachment:

Book title is Channeling Tinkerbell, but file name is CT.RTF. I
use old version of wordperfect cause I'm on a old computer.
My book don't have no pictures. Should I get some? Also, its been
profesionally edited. Is it good editing or will I need to have it
done agan?
I don't have a author bio cause this is my firs book. Do you know
where I can get one?
I can be reached at RCranium@att.net.
Oh, I tried but I couldn't get into those places to see what yur
authors say, but I figur it must be good or you wouldnt' offer.
Probbly just my computer is old.
If you like my book, I hope you offe a big advance. I could sur
use the money to mak up for all the editing.
Sincerely,
Richard Cranium
p.s. the guys at work call me profesor casue of my last name, but
I'm not a profesor.

Just to further test PA, the email P&E sent was deliberately filled with errors. Did that deter them? Did that warn them off? Did they even offer to tell me the truth at that point about what PA offered? Instead, PA responded with the following email after the manuscript was emailed to them:

Of course, PA did respond within the next two weeks with the following email:
From: PublishAmerica AcquisitionsJust so PA wouldn't think Richard was in a hurry, P&E didn't respond immediately. You'll notice that we gave a reason that might have caused a real publisher to be wary. Not PA, though. Here's our response and their response to ours:Save Address Reminder To: RCranium@att.net Subject: PublishAmerica acceptance Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2006 18:19:52 +0000 [View Source] Dear Richard Cranium: I am happy to inform you that PublishAmerica has decided to give your book the chance it deserves. We are offering to publish "Channeling Tinkerbell". As this is an important moment, and an important message, please read this email completely from start to finish. An email will follow this one with the sample contract attached for your review. If you do not receive the email with the attached sample contract in twenty-four hours, please contact me, so I can resend the document via another method. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have concerning the contract. The main terms are that we will pay you climbing royalties starting at 8%, you retain the copyright, and you also retain all movie and audio rights. A symbolic $1 advance underlines that all financial risk is carried by the Publisher, as we firmly believe it should be. Upon receiving your e-mail in acceptance with the terms, we will forward the final contract documents to you via regular mail for your signature. Along with your e-mail please include your legal name, current address, telephone number and title of work as you would like it to appear on the final contract. Please note that once you have requested that we send the official contract, we cannot further amend the terms. We strongly advise that you read http://www.publishamerica.com/faqs.htm before signing your contract. Here we address frequently asked questions about, among other issues, why we never charge our authors any fees, why bookstores cannot possibly stock all new books, and why we believe it is a good thing that bookstores can return unsold books to PublishAmerica. I also advise that you discuss your use of quotes with a lawyer. You will have to obtain written permission for all quotes used and for any real life individuals mentioned. Per Paragraph 27 of the Contract, you will be liable for any such infringements. I also suggest visiting the Library of Congress' website: www.loc.gov/copyright. Once the signed contract has been processed in our offices, you will be contacted by our Production department regarding "the next step" for your book in the publishing process. Please feel free to e-mail any concerns or questions dealing with the terms of the contract to ryant@publishamerica.com. Also, please visit http://www.publishamerica.com/shopping/ to see what our books are about, how we price them, and what they look like. You will find many thousands of books there! Welcome to PublishAmerica, and congratulations on what promises to be an exciting time ahead. Sincerely, Ryan Tuccinardi Acquisitions Department PublishAmerica www.publishamerica.com

I will draft your contract today and put it in the mail tomorrow. Please confirm: Address: 109 Governor Street, 10th Floor Richmond VA 23219 Legal name: Richard Cranium Also, while we communicate almost entirely through email, we do like to have a phone number available. May I have your phone number? I'm actually pretty sure at least three PA books have been/are being made into movies - two are mentioned on our website, and a third was, but I can't find it now... perhaps that movie was cancelled. Anyway, thanks, and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
